3D scanning for car dealers
A 3D scan lets car dealers present the cars in their stock interactively. With nothing more than a phone, you record a car in two to three minutes. After uploading, you receive a 3D model after about an hour that can be viewed straight in the browser.
That gives potential buyers a different way to look at a used car than a series of ordinary photos. Viewers can move around the car themselves, zoom in and look at details from different angles.
Show more of every car
In a traditional listing, the photographer decides which images a buyer gets to see. A front view, side view, interior shot and a few detail photos together give an impression of the car, but they remain separate images.
A 3D model works differently. The visitor chooses the viewpoint. They can rotate the car freely, get closer and look at the wheels or the number plate, for example. Even a viewpoint that was not literally photographed during the recording can be viewed.
For a car dealer, this means one scan can deliver many different viewing angles without taking a separate photo for every angle.
A 3D scan instead of extra equipment
A 3D scan does not have to start in a photo studio. CarTwin uses one continuous video recording made with a phone camera.
The recording consists of two laps: one at normal height and one at wheel height. In total this takes about two to three minutes.
Then you upload the recording. CarTwin processes it into a three-dimensional reconstruction. The technique behind it is 3D Gaussian Splatting, but for the dealer what matters most is the simple process: film, upload and view the model.
From stock to interactive presentation
A 3D model can be shared via a link and downloaded as a file. That means you can use the model wherever you present your stock.
The model can also be viewed directly in the browser. Visitors do not need an app or plug-in, which lowers the barrier to actually looking at a car from different sides.
Presenting stock is not only about showing as many images as possible. It is also about letting an interested buyer check for themselves what can be seen. A 3D model makes details all around the car accessible without having to take a new photo for every possible question.
An honest view of the car
A 3D model is not photo editing in which parts of the car are hidden or made to look better. CarTwin does not edit anything away. The car is captured as it was at the moment of the scan.
That matters for used cars. A buyer does not only want to see the attractive side of a car, but also to check details. By moving around the model themselves, visitors get more control over what they look at.
